Packaging options for international sports goods buyers

Packaging is a commercial decision, not an afterthought. It affects retail readiness, dimensional freight cost, breakage risk and destination-market compliance labelling.

Quick answer

Choose packaging based on channel: bulk polybag for wholesalers; individual polybag + hangtag for distributors; branded retail box for direct-to-retail. Every SKU needs correct EAN/UPC barcodes, country-of-origin marking, importer-of-record labels and language-appropriate care instructions.

Master-carton mechanics

  • Dimensions matter for container fill — 40'HC fits ~60–65 CBM usable.
  • Corrugation grade (single-wall, double-wall, K-liner) governs stacking strength.
  • Barcode master-carton labels with SKU, quantity, PO number and destination.
  • Palletisation on request — Euro pallet vs GMA vs slip-sheet.

Compliance markings by market

  • US — country of origin ('Made in Pakistan'), FTC care labels, CPSIA tracking label.
  • EU — CE marking where relevant, REACH declaration on file, importer address, GPSR.
  • UK — UKCA marking where relevant, care labels, importer of record.
  • Canada — bilingual EN/FR labelling.
  • GCC — Arabic labelling, SASO/ESMA conformity marks as required.
  • Australia — country of origin, care by AS/NZS 1957.
  • Latin America — Portuguese (BR) or Spanish (MX) care and safety labels.

Frequently asked questions

Can the factory supply my own retail packaging design?
Yes — supply artwork with dielines, colour references and material spec. The factory quotes on the box vendor's minimum sheet size, which is why packaging often has its own MOQ.
Who is responsible for barcodes?
The buyer supplies the EAN/UPC allocation; the factory prints and applies. Never let the factory generate barcodes without your allocation — duplicates in retail systems are a nightmare.
How does packaging affect freight cost?
Sea freight is charged on the greater of weight or volume. Over-boxing inflates volume and increases per-unit freight. Design master cartons to maximise container fill.
