Shipping and Incoterms® 2020 for international sports goods buyers

Incoterms® 2020 define who pays for freight, insurance, export clearance, and import duty. Choosing the right one is a cost and risk decision — not a formality.

Quick answer

FOB shifts risk at origin port; CIF adds freight and insurance to destination port; CFR is CIF without insurance; DAP delivers to your address before import duty; DDP delivers duty-paid. For most sports imports, buyers with an established broker prefer FOB or CFR; first-time importers often pick DAP or DDP to simplify.

Cost breakdown of a typical sea freight lane

  • Ex-works factory cost (product only).
  • Inland trucking to the export port.
  • Export clearance, THC (Terminal Handling Charges).
  • Sea freight per container or per CBM (LCL).
  • Insurance premium (~0.2–0.5% of CIF value).
  • Destination THC and local charges.
  • Import duty at the applicable HS code.
  • VAT/GST on the duty-inclusive value.
  • Broker fees and last-mile delivery.

HS codes buyers should verify

HS codes are declared at destination; the exporter's suggestion is only a starting point. Confirm with your customs broker to avoid mis-classification penalties.

FCL vs LCL — a simple rule

Below roughly half a 40'HC, LCL is usually cheaper. Above that, book FCL. LCL rates fluctuate more and have more handling touches — for fragile or high-value cargo, FCL is safer even below the break-even point.

Frequently asked questions

Is DDP always the safest option?
It's the simplest, not always the cheapest. DDP pricing includes the seller's duty estimate plus a risk margin — an experienced broker can often land cargo cheaper on DAP or CFR.
Who insures the cargo on FOB?
The buyer, from the moment the goods are loaded on the vessel at the origin port. Never assume the seller's insurance covers you post-load.
How do I verify the right HS code?
Ask your destination customs broker. Rulings and tariff schedules are country-specific; the same product can sit under different HS codes in different jurisdictions.
