Wool vs Cotton Caps
The two dominant crown fabrics — a wool-blend melton (typically 80/20 acrylic-wool) and brushed cotton twill — sit at opposite ends of the shape-vs-comfort trade. This is what changes on the factory floor, in retail positioning and at price.

Wool-blend melton — the structured crown fabric
- Standard blend: 80% acrylic, 20% wool. 100% wool exists but is heavy and expensive.
- Weight: 350–420 gsm; heavy enough to hold a structured 6-panel crown without collapse.
- Surface: matte, slightly fuzzy nap. Hides embroidery jump-stitches well.
- Colourfast in most colours; deep reds and navys can crock — wash-test before bulk.
- Pairs with heavy fusible buckram to build the authentic snapback / fitted silhouette.
- Season: autumn / winter primary; summer wool caps are a niche premium play.
Cotton twill — the relaxed crown fabric
- Weight: 8–10oz brushed cotton twill (2/1 or 3/1 weave).
- Surface: soft brushed face; takes garment wash and pigment dye beautifully.
- Structure: light or no fusing — the fabric drapes, so it defines the dad-hat silhouette.
- Colour range: full pigment-dye palette; enzyme wash gives the vintage worn look.
- Season: year-round; the summer / spring default and DTC hero fabric.
- Cost: usually 10–15% below wool-blend melton at the same FOB tier.

Pitfalls
- Wool crown without buckram — collapses in wear; looks unfinished.
- Cotton twill with heavy buckram — feels stiff and cheap, defeats the drape.
- Deep-red wool bulk without a crock test — colour rubs off on collars.
- Enzyme wash on wool — destroys the nap; reserve for cotton.
