Sherpa-Lined Hoodies

Sherpa is a synthetic pile fabric that mimics shearling — soft, insulating and immediately warm on skin contact. Sherpa-lined hoodies are the cold-weather answer to plain fleece. The two questions to answer: where to line (hood only vs full body) and how much bulk is acceptable.

Hood-only lining

The most common sherpa build. The hood interior is fully lined with sherpa, either as a separate hood-lining panel bagged out to the hood shell or as a hood cut from a bonded sherpa-shell fabric. Adds ~80–120g and doesn't affect body drape at all. This is the mass-market winter hoodie construction.

Full-body lining

The whole hoodie is lined — front, back, sleeves and hood. Weight jumps 200–400g and the silhouette gets noticeably bulkier. Full-body sherpa hoodies function as light outerwear rather than as layering hoodies. Reserve for winter drops or outerwear-adjacent silhouettes.

Pile grade

GradePile heightNotes
Short-pile6–8mmCleaner look, lower warmth, doesn't add bulk
Medium-pile8–12mmStreetwear standard; visible pile at cuff / hood edge
High-pile / Berber12–20mmPremium look, warmest, high MOQ, harder to sew

Construction notes

  • Bagged-out hood — sherpa attaches to shell at hood opening; cleanest finish.
  • Bonded sherpa-shell — single lamented fabric; simpler to sew but stiffer drape.
  • Long stitch — sherpa fluff catches in the needle plate; use a 90/14 needle and 4.0 SPI (not tighter).
  • Shedding — new sherpa sheds fluff for 2–3 washes; note this on the care label.

Common pitfalls

  • Cheap sherpa — low-density pile flattens permanently after 5 washes.
  • Full-body lining on 500 GSM shell — total garment weight approaches 1.5kg and the hoodie becomes uncomfortable.
  • Wrong needle — standard needles push sherpa pile through the seam, showing fluff on the outside.
  • No neck tape covering sherpa hood seam — pile fibres irritate the neck.
