Seam Strength Testing
Seams are where a bag actually fails. A destructive pull-test on a small sample per PO is the only way to know your handle joins and strap anchors will survive the warranty window. Here's the protocol we run and the Newton-force targets we hold.

Specimen preparation
- Cut a 100 mm x 100 mm sample centred on the seam.
- Mount in a tensile tester with 75 mm jaw spacing, seam perpendicular to pull direction.
- Condition sample at 20°C / 65% RH for 4 hours before test (ASTM D1776).
- Test at least 5 specimens per seam type per PO — report mean and lowest.

Reading the failure mode
- Thread break — correct. Fabric outperformed the stitch. Bag is repairable in the field.
- Fabric tear along the seam line — seam is stronger than the fabric. Rare on woven polyester; usually a sign of a coating burn or fabric flaw.
- Fabric tear away from the seam — fabric flaw in the specimen, invalid test, re-run.
- Bar-tack pull-through — stitch density too low or bar-tack not anchored through the reinforcement patch. Corrective action required.
Common pitfalls
- Testing new-off-the-line samples only — real world seams weaken after 6-12 months of UV and abrasion. Include aged samples where possible.
- Not conditioning specimens — humidity swings results by up to 15%.
- Testing at the wrong jaw speed — 100 mm/min overstates seam strength vs the ASTM 300 mm/min standard.
- Reporting only the mean — lowest of 5 specimens is what actually fails in a customer's hands.

Every bag PO ships with an in-house seam-strength report on the critical load-bearing seams. Third-party (SGS, Intertek) certificates available on request for buyer-facing documentation.
