Reflective Print on Hoodies
Reflective print — glass beads or micro-prisms bonded to a heat-transfer film — flashes silver-white under a light source. It has moved from utility running gear into streetwear graphics, and the quality gap between 3M Scotchlite and generic Chinese glass-bead film is bigger than most buyers realise.
3M Scotchlite vs generic
3M's licensed retro-reflective film returns ≥400 candela per lux per square metre — the ANSI 107 high-visibility threshold. Generic glass-bead film returns 150–300 cd/lx/m² when new and drops sharply after 15–20 washes as beads shed. If the brand story leans on visibility (running, cycling, uniform), spec 3M and pay the ~3× premium. For streetwear flash-look-only, generic is acceptable.
Placement rules
- Chest, back yoke, sleeve, hood front — flat, non-flex zones.
- Never on rib, cuff or elbow — reflective film cracks under stretch.
- Keep off seams — the film peels at seam bulk.
- Overlap panels only with a 5 mm gap for seam allowance.
Application
Reflective transfer is heat-pressed at 150°C for 15 seconds with medium pressure. Fleece needs a pre-press (5 s dry press) to remove moisture — trapped moisture blows micro-bubbles under the film. Cover sheet is required to avoid iron marks. Cold peel for the sharpest edge; hot peel is faster but risks lift.
Durability
- 3M films: 50+ washes at 40°C with retained reflectivity above threshold.
- Generic films: 20–30 washes before beads visibly shed.
- Never tumble dry high — heat cracks the film.
- Iron on reverse only — direct iron destroys reflectivity.
