Private Label Sportswear

Launching a private-label sportswear brand is a hardware problem — labels, trims, packaging and compliance — as much as it is a marketing one. This is the checklist a first-collection brand actually needs before opening the store.

Compliance labelling — what the destination market demands

  • EU — fibre content by weight in all EU languages of sale (Textile Regulation 1007/2011), care icons per ISO 3758, country of origin, importer address.
  • UK — same as EU post-Brexit but requires UK importer address separately.
  • US — Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires fibre content, country of origin, RN number if registered, and care instructions.
  • Canada — bilingual (English/French) fibre and care information mandatory.
  • Australia — country of origin plus AS/NZS 1957 care labelling icons.

Retail packaging — from polybag to kit box

  • Standard retail — individual polybag with self-seal flap, folded jersey, hangtag attached at the collar loop. Master carton of 24–48 pieces.
  • Premium retail — folded card insert to hold the jersey shape, tissue wrap, printed polybag, hangtag with brand story.
  • Kit box / gift box — printed rigid box, jersey + shorts + socks bundled as a kit. Adds USD 2.50–5.00 per unit but doubles perceived value at retail.
  • Eco packaging — recycled polybag with reduced plastic, FSC-certified hangtag paper, no unnecessary card inserts. Now expected by EU retailers.
  • D2C shipping — reusable mailer bag or e-commerce carton with branded inner tissue. Skip individual polybag if going direct.

ODM vs OEM — pick the route per style

  • ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) — factory supplies a proven pattern, buyer supplies branding, colourways and artwork. Fast, low MOQ, low sampling cost. Perfect for launch collections.
  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) — buyer supplies full tech pack including exclusive pattern, fabric spec and construction. Slower, higher MOQ, but the fit and identity are fully owned.
  • Hybrid — ODM the core basics (tee, hoodie, short) and OEM the signature silhouette that defines the brand. This is how most successful private-label brands structure their first three seasons.
