Private Label Sports Bags

Private label is the fastest, lowest-risk path from brand idea to first PO — a proven stock silhouette, your labels and packaging, and a 60-day production window. Here's what to brand, what to leave alone, and where the economics actually work.

Retail packaging tiers

  • Basic — clear polybag, branded hangtag. Fine for e-commerce and gym channels.
  • Mid — printed polybag or kraft sleeve, hangtag, care leaflet. Standard for sports retail.
  • Premium — printed gift box or drawstring dust bag. Used for premium travel and gifting.
  • Master carton — 5-layer corrugated, printed with SKU / barcode / country of origin.
  • Retail-ready display case (RRDU) — direct-to-shelf carton, requires buyer-specific artwork.

Launch economics — a realistic model

A launch programme with three SKUs at 200 units each (600 bags total):

  • Bag FOB — sports duffel category typically ranges USD 6–14 depending on fabric and hardware.
  • Branding uplift — USD 0.30–0.80 per unit for label + hangtag + custom polybag.
  • One-time setup — USD 300–600 for label loom, print plates and sample rounds.
  • Sea freight to Europe/US — typically USD 0.60–1.20 per unit LCL on a small launch.
  • Landed cost — the bag FOB plus branding, freight and duty, before your retail margin.

Figures are illustrative planning ranges; every quote depends on live fabric, hardware and freight rates.

Pitfalls at launch

  • Ordering too many SKUs — three colourways beat six every time on a first drop.
  • Under-ordering hangtags and polybags — they have their own MOQs and lead times.
  • No barcode / SKU system — retail buyers won't take a bag they can't scan.
  • Skipping a physical pre-production sample — 'digital-only approved' launches ship surprises.
  • Ignoring country-of-origin and care-label regulations — EU / US customs holds cost weeks.
