Manufacturing 101

OEM vs Private Label Manufacturing

The terms get used interchangeably — but they mean very different things for your product, your MOQ and your intellectual property.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing)

You bring the design, tech pack and specification. The factory builds exactly what you designed and puts your brand on it. You own the design; the factory owns the process. Best for brands with a technical product team or a strong existing catalogue.

Private Label

The factory already has a proven product (e.g. a match-grade thermal-bonded football). You brand it with your logo, colours and packaging. Fastest path to market. MOQ is lower because the tooling and materials already exist.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturing)

The factory designs new products for you based on a brief. Common when a brand wants a signature product without building an internal design team.

Quick comparison

  • Design ownership: OEM = brand, Private Label = factory catalogue, ODM = shared
  • MOQ: Private Label lowest (100–300), OEM higher (300–1,000)
  • Lead time: Private Label 20–30 days, OEM 30–50 days
  • Cost per unit: Private Label lowest at low volume, OEM lowest at scale
  • Exclusivity: OEM = full, Private Label = shared design

Which one is right for you?

Launching a brand and want to move fast? Private label. Building a differentiated product story with proprietary construction? OEM. Somewhere in between — you have a vision but no CAD files? ODM. Findup Sports operates all three models across footballs, goalkeeper gloves, sportswear, bags and caps.
