OEM Sportswear Manufacturing

OEM sportswear is a discipline of coordination — tech pack, fabric development, sample cycles, tooling, size grading, bulk production, decoration, QC and export documentation. This is the workflow, stage by stage, with the numbers a buyer should expect at each step.

What a complete tech pack contains

  • Front and back flat sketches with construction callouts (seam types, stitch density, panel names).
  • Colourways — every colour combination the style will ship in, referenced by Pantone or supplied lab-dip swatches.
  • Fabric specification — composition, GSM, structure (interlock, mesh, spandex ratio), finish (moisture-wicking, anti-microbial).
  • Full measurement chart — every point of measure across the size run, with tolerances (usually ±1 cm on body, ±0.5 cm on details).
  • Artwork files — vector artwork for print/embroidery, placement diagrams, dimensions in mm, and colour breakdowns.
  • Trim spec — labels (main, care, size), hangtag, price tag, zippers, drawcords, aglets.
  • Packaging spec — polybag size, hangtag placement, folded card, master carton dimensions.
  • Care and content label wording and language requirements for target market.

What drives OEM pricing beyond the unit cost

  • Fabric cost — 40–55% of the FOB unit price. Sublimation-grade interlock, engineered mesh and spandex blends each carry different price bands.
  • Decoration — sublimation adds low per-unit cost but flat setup; screen print adds per-colour setup; embroidery adds per-1,000-stitch cost.
  • Order size — MOQ pieces carry setup overhead; scale reduces per-unit cost by 15–30% between 500 and 5,000 units.
  • Trims and packaging — retail-grade folded card and premium woven labels can add USD 0.80–1.50 per unit.
  • Compliance testing — buyer-nominated audits (BSCI, SEDEX, WRAP) and lab tests (Oeko-Tex, wash-fastness) are billed to the PO.

Common OEM mistakes buyers make

  • Approving PPS without wear-testing — construction issues only surface after 20 minutes of movement.
  • No colour standard supplied — asking for 'royal blue' without Pantone yields three interpretations across three batches.
  • Skipping size-run sample — grading errors on XL and XS discovered only at bulk PPS delivery cost 4-week rework.
  • Changing fabric mid-programme — every switch triggers a new sample cycle and delays bulk by 15–20 days.
  • Underestimating freight — ocean transit from Karachi to Rotterdam is ~28 days; air is 4–7 days but 4x cost.
