OEM Bag Manufacturing

Custom bag manufacturing looks simple on paper — send a design, get bags. Under the hood, it's a six-stage pipeline where new brands lose weeks to preventable rework. Here's the workflow, the realistic timeline, and where to invest attention.

What a production-ready tech pack contains

  • Dimensioned tech drawings — front, back, side, top, base, opened.
  • Bill of materials — fabric denier, coating, weight; hardware brand and spec; thread Tex; foam density.
  • Pantone colour callout — solid coated for face fabric, TPX for accents.
  • Labels and hangtag artwork — including care label multi-language.
  • Packaging spec — polybag gauge, gift box artwork, master carton size.
  • Stitch and thread — SPI (stitches per inch), thread Tex, seam allowance.
  • AQL inspection level — 2.5 major / 4.0 minor is the retail standard.

Tooling costs to know about

  • Clicker dies — USD 40–120 each; one per pattern piece.
  • Custom mould (buckle, logo plaque) — USD 800–2,500; amortises above 30,000 units.
  • Woven label loom setup — USD 60–150; roll of 5,000 units minimum.
  • PVC / rubber patch mould — USD 200–600 depending on complexity.
  • Sublimation panel plate — no hard tooling, per-design setup only.

Where new brands lose time

  • Incomplete tech packs — every gap becomes an email round-trip and adds 2–3 days.
  • Late Pantone approval — dye lot booking slips a week and pushes the whole schedule.
  • Booking YKK/Duraflex last minute — branded hardware needs 3–4 weeks lead time.
  • Skipping the PP sample — bulk defects cost 50× more than sample rework.
  • No AQL callout — factory ships to internal standards, buyer rejects on arrival.
