Mesh Back Cap Guide
The mesh back is what makes a trucker cap a trucker cap. But the "mesh" on a promo giveaway, a premium streetwear cap and a running-cap ventilation panel are three different fabrics with different hole sizes, weights and structural rules.

Air-mesh — the standard trucker back
- The default trucker cap back. 100% polyester, knitted with visible ~2mm hexagonal holes.
- Weight: 100–120 gsm. Firm enough to stand up when the cap is off the head.
- High airflow; mid-range visual openness.
- Colour-matched to the front foam. Print on air-mesh is possible but reads coarse.
- Pairs with the foam-front trucker as the industry-default construction.
Foam-lock mesh — the premium streetwear mesh
- Denser knitted mesh, ~1mm holes, 140–160 gsm.
- Reads almost like a solid fabric from 2m away but breathes on the head.
- Used on premium streetwear truckers where the visual has to be clean.
- Better base for embroidery on the back panels — the denser knit backs the stitching.
- Airflow lower than air-mesh; not the running-cap choice.
Stretch mesh — the performance mesh
- Polyester / spandex blend; typically 88/12 or 92/8.
- Slight 2-way stretch; hugs the head on flex-fit and running caps.
- Hole pattern is smaller and more irregular; reads like a texture, not a mesh.
- Standard on flex-fit fitted-style caps that use no closure.
- Higher cost than air-mesh; slower on the sewing line because it stretches under the foot.

Construction notes
- Mesh is always attached to the two front foam-backed panels — never structurally load-bearing on its own.
- The seam between foam front and mesh back sits at the panel-2-to-panel-3 line.
- Sweatband: cotton on classic trucker; polyester wicking on performance variants.
- Back closure: plastic snap on classic trucker; hook-and-loop on tech; no closure on flex-fit.
Common pitfalls
- Air-mesh with a bulky back embroidery — the stitching pushes through the holes; looks messy.
- Foam-lock on a promo brief — priced up over the client's budget when air-mesh would meet the need.
- Colour mismatch — the foam front and mesh back must be dyed in the same lot or the shade drift is visible.
- Stretch mesh with a fixed hook-and-loop closure — the two systems fight and the fit ends up unpredictable.
