Leather Patch Caps

The heritage brand mark for premium caps — a cut leather rectangle or shield sewn to the front panel, marked by laser engraving or hot debossing. Signals craft, ages well, and reads at any distance. Here's what actually goes into one.

Genuine vs PU leather

  • Genuine leather — cowhide or split leather, 1.4–1.6mm. Natural grain, ages with wear, positions the cap as premium. Higher unit cost and colour variance.
  • PU (polyurethane) leather — synthetic, uniform surface, no colour variance, cheaper. Cleaner laser marks. Vegan-friendly.
  • Bonded leather — leather-fibre offcuts glued into sheets. Cheapest option; avoid on premium caps as it flakes.
  • Suede finish — split-leather flesh side, softer look, higher wear. Debossing preferred over laser for suede.

Patch shapes & sizes

  • Rectangle — 45×30mm standard, the trucker classic.
  • Shield / crest — 45×50mm, brand-heritage look.
  • Circle — 35mm diameter, small logo emblem.
  • Custom die-cut — any shape; adds a small die-tooling charge one-time.

Attachment

  • Sewn-on with contrast top-stitch — standard, most durable.
  • Rivet-set corners — bold utility look, adds hardware step.
  • Heat-seal film + edge stitch — fast production, still needs edge stitching to survive wash.
  • Never use glue-only attachment — patch will lift within weeks of wear.

Cost & MOQ

  • MOQ per style: 150 caps for standard rectangle; 300+ for die-cut shapes.
  • Tooling: laser is toolless (file-driven); deboss needs a metal die (~one-time charge per artwork).
  • Unit cost: PU is ~40–50% cheaper than genuine; laser and deboss cost within 10% of each other.
  • Sample time: 5–7 working days including patch cut, mark and cap sewn sample.

Common pitfalls

  • Fine text at 4pt on suede — burns illegibly. Keep type ≥6pt on suede.
  • Genuine leather + wash — dye can migrate. Cold spot-clean only, and print care labels accordingly.
  • Debossing on thin split leather — die can punch through. Specify 1.4mm minimum.
  • Ordering before physical mark sample — laser tone varies by leather batch. Approve on the actual hide.
