Football Sizes Explained
Sizes 3, 4, 5, mini and skills — each one has an official circumference and weight range and an age band it belongs to. Get sizing wrong and coaches send the shipment back. Get it right and the same ball fits an academy across five age groups.
Size 5 — adult (13+)
The adult standard. Circumference 68–70 cm, weight 410–450 g at kick-off. Used in all professional play from FIFA competitions down to school leagues from age 13 upwards. This is the size 80–85% of any football range should be built around.
Size 4 — youth (8–12)
Circumference 63.5–66 cm, weight 350–390 g. Youth academy standard from around age 8 to 12. Same construction options as size 5 — hand-stitched, thermal-bonded, machine-stitched — just scaled panels. Do not sell an adult ball to a U-10 team.
Size 3 — junior (5–8)
Circumference 58.5–61 cm, weight 300–340 g. Junior training for age 5–8. Almost always machine-stitched or lightweight hand-stitched — heavy hand-stitched construction is overspec for the age group.
Mini & skills balls
Circumference 43–48 cm (mini) or as small as 40 cm (skills). Not FIFA-regulated — these are for warm-ups, promotional use, kids under 5, and technical skills training. Cover material is usually TPU or synthetic leather for cost.

Youth grading rules
When you scale down from size 5, the panel design stays but panel proportions shrink evenly. Do not change the number of panels between sizes — a size 3 ball with 32 panels rides consistently with a size 5 with 32 panels. If your brand runs bonded match balls in size 5, offer the same construction in size 4 for continuity as players age up.
