FIFA Quality Pro Explained

FIFA Quality Pro is the top tier of FIFA's football testing programme — the specification a match ball must meet to be used at the highest professional level. Here's exactly what the tests measure, the tolerances, and how a factory engineers a ball to hit them.

What FIFA Quality Pro actually is

FIFA runs a three-tier testing programme for match balls: FIFA Basic, FIFA Quality and FIFA Quality Pro. Quality Pro is the strictest — reserved for balls used in top-flight professional competitions. Testing is done at FIFA-accredited independent laboratories against a published set of physical and performance criteria; balls that pass earn the right to carry the mark on that specific model for a defined period.

Note: FIFA Quality Pro is a licensing programme owned by FIFA. Findup Sports is not itself a FIFA licensee; we manufacture match-grade footballs engineered to the same internationally recognized performance benchmarks, and can support brands pursuing the programme on their own licence.

The core tests & tolerances (size 5)

  • Circumference: 68.5–69.5 cm (Quality Pro), measured across multiple planes
  • Weight: 420–445 g at time of manufacture
  • Sphericity: max 1.5% diameter deviation across 16 measurements
  • Rebound: rebound height between ~135–155 cm from a 2 m drop onto a steel plate at 20 °C
  • Water absorption: ≤ 10% weight gain after 250 rotations in a pressurised water rig
  • Loss of pressure: ≤ 20% pressure drop over 72 hours at 20 °C
  • Shape and size retention: ≤ 1.5% change after 2,000 impacts at 50 km/h against a steel plate
  • Balance: centre of gravity offset from geometric centre within a tight limit

Exact numbers are set and updated by FIFA in the current Quality Programme handbook; the ranges above reflect the widely referenced Quality Pro thresholds.

How the tests are actually run

Circumference & sphericity: measured on a calibrated jig that rotates the ball through 16 axes; each reading is logged and averaged.

Rebound: ball is conditioned to 20 °C and inflated to a set pressure, then dropped from exactly 2 m onto a steel plate. The rebound is measured with a high-speed camera or optical sensor; multiple drops must land within the tolerance band.

Water absorption: the ball is pressed against a wet plate and rotated 250 times under load, simulating heavy rain play. Weight gain is compared to dry weight.

Shape & size retention: a compressed-air cannon fires the ball at 50 km/h against a steel plate 2,000 times; circumference, sphericity and pressure are re-measured afterwards.

How a factory engineers to hit Quality Pro

  • Outer cover: high-grade microfibre PU with a textured surface for grip and aerodynamic stability
  • Lamination: 4 backing plies (cotton/polyester blends) laminated with latex adhesive — more plies = better shape retention and lower water uptake
  • Panel geometry: bonded 6, 8, 12 or 14-panel layouts engineered in CAD to reduce seam length and flight variance
  • Assembly: thermal bonding under pressure moulds so seams are effectively sealed against water
  • Bladder: butyl bladder for the low pressure-loss target; latex is faster losing air
  • Valve: high-grade self-sealing valve with a silicone-lubricated core
  • QC: every production batch is dimension- and rebound-tested inline against the golden sample

Certification cost & timing (typical)

Testing is booked directly with a FIFA-approved lab (INNOTEC, Labosport, SGS, ISA Sport and others operate under the programme). Lab fees vary but generally sit in the low-thousand-USD range per ball model tested, plus retesting fees if a batch fails. On top of lab fees, the brand pays FIFA a licence fee to carry the mark. Turnaround from sample submission to a licensed mark is typically 6–10 weeks when the ball passes first time.

Quality vs Quality Pro — what changes

  • Quality Pro tolerances are tighter across every metric — sphericity, rebound spread, water uptake and shape retention
  • Quality Pro adds long-run durability tests (2,000-impact retention) that Quality does not
  • Quality-tier balls are common at semi-pro and academy level; Quality Pro is aimed at top-flight competition
