The Custom Football Design Guide

Design decisions made in the brief phase decide whether your ball looks like a €12 promo giveaway or a €45 retail hero. This is the working guide we hand every brand before their first custom order.

Logo printing methods

Four methods dominate custom football decoration, each with a different feel and cost profile: screen printing (best for solid spot colours, most durable, 1–4 colours), heat-transfer film (best for gradients and photographic artwork), sublimation (bonded balls only — dyes the panel itself, unlimited colours, no hand feel change), and hot foil / metallics (premium tier, adds €0.30–0.80 per ball).

  • Screen print — up to 4 spot colours, 5–7 year durability outdoors.
  • Heat transfer — full colour, feel a slight surface plate on the panel.
  • Sublimation — bonded balls only, panel colour becomes the print.
  • Foil stamp — retail hero tier, use sparingly for logos and size marks.

Pantone matching

Nominate Pantone Solid Coated references on your tech pack — not screen RGB or hex. We match to within Delta-E 2.0 on PU covers; TPU and rubber tolerate a slightly wider drift. Metallic and fluorescent Pantones (the 800 / 900 series) require a dedicated ink run and add a small surcharge but hold colour far better than a mixed near-match.

Custom colours

Solid colourways are cheapest — one dyed panel stock, one print pass. Two-tone panels (e.g. alternating black/white 32-panel classics) hold their form. Full-bleed gradients look striking in renders but stretch across seams; specify the fade direction relative to the valve so it lands cleanly on every panel.

Panel graphics

The four panel-graphic archetypes: monogram (single mark repeated on every panel), hero-and-plain (one graphic panel, rest blank — most retail-friendly), all-over pattern (bonded balls only, sublimation) and geo-block (colour-blocked panels with no artwork — cheapest custom look, ships in 30 days). Match tier balls usually run hero-and-plain so the referee can spot rotation.

Packaging & unboxing

The ball is 60% of the purchase decision; packaging closes the remaining 40%. Retail hero SKUs ship in a printed inner box with a moulded pulp cradle, a hangtag with QR to warranty registration, and tissue wrap. Inner box adds 6–10% to unit cost but unlocks a €10–15 retail uplift. Promo SKUs stay in polybag with a printed label — do not over-package a €12 ball.
