The Cropped Hoodie Guide
Cropped hoodies are the female range's entry SKU — same pattern block as the pullover, cut short and finished with a compact rib. Get the hem placement right relative to the natural waist and the silhouette flatters every body type.

Rib at the hem
Cropped hems use compact rib — 5–6cm doubled, 2.5–3cm visible — rather than the 8–10cm hem rib of a regular hoodie. Too-tall rib eats the visible crop; too-short leaves the hem to curl. Include 5% elastane so the compact rib recovers from stretching over the shoulders when the hoodie goes on.
Pocket options
Kangaroo pockets on a cropped hem often look forced — the pocket ends up at the hem line. Options: omit the pocket entirely for a cleaner cropped look; use a smaller side-entry pocket; or specifically design a smaller kangaroo pocket positioned higher on the chest.
Grading — women vs unisex crop
Women's cropped grades on female fit blocks (higher armhole, narrower shoulder, more waist definition). Unisex cropped just shortens a standard block. Women's fit reads more intentional; unisex is faster to develop from an existing men's pattern.
Common pitfalls
- Pocket at hem — the pocket bag hangs below the hem. Either raise the pocket or delete it.
- Standard rib height — 8cm hem rib on a 40cm cropped body eats a fifth of the garment length.
- No pattern re-block — chopping a regular hoodie at the waist leaves the armhole in the wrong place; the shoulder line drops.
- Sleeve length not shortened — cropped body + full-length sleeves looks unfinished. Grade sleeve to −3cm.
