Buckram Interlining
Buckram is a resin-stiffened cotton scrim fused to the inside of the two front crown panels. It's why a snapback stands up on its own and a dad hat collapses. Pick the grade, place it in the right zone, fuse at the right temperature — the crown either holds shape or it doesn't.
What buckram actually is
Woven cotton scrim (or poly-cotton on cheaper grades) coated on one face with a heat-activated PE or PA resin. Under a fusing press the resin melts and bonds the scrim to the back of the shell fabric — two layers become one composite panel with the stiffness of the scrim and the surface of the shell.

Placement — where the buckram goes
Buckram fuses to the back of the two FRONT panels only. Side and back panels remain single-layer to keep the crown breathable and the fit comfortable. The buckram is cut 3mm smaller than the panel pattern on all sides so the resin doesn't ooze into the seam allowance.
- Full-panel buckram — most common; entire front panel stiffened.
- Half-height buckram — upper half of the front panels only; softer at the sweatband.
- No buckram — dad hat, camp cap, running cap; the shell fabric alone.
Fusing — the temperature window
Fusing happens on a continuous roller press or a flat-bed platen. Three variables must all be right or the bond fails within weeks:
- Temperature: 130–150°C — hotter melts the resin through the fabric face and causes shine; cooler leaves a weak bond.
- Pressure: 2.5–3.5 kg/cm² — even pressure across the panel; low pressure leaves bubbles.
- Dwell time: 15–20 seconds — shorter = weak bond, longer = resin migration.
- Cool-down: 30 seconds under a cold roller sets the bond before handling.
Failure modes — how buckram goes wrong
- Delamination — buckram lifts off the shell after washing. Cause: under-fused, wrong resin for the fabric, or hot wash (60°C+).
- Resin bleed — shiny patches on the outer face fabric. Cause: over-temperature fuse or wrong resin type.
- Bubble / orange peel — uneven pressure at fusing; visible bumps on the crown.
- Buckram edge line — the 3mm inset edge shows as a subtle line on the outside; happens on light shell fabrics.
How to spec buckram on a tech pack
- Grade — light / medium / heavy — or explicitly "unstructured, no buckram".
- Coverage — full panel or half height; buckram inset from seam allowance.
- Care label call-out — cold wash 30°C max, no tumble dry (protects the bond).
- Sample check — flex the front panel; a good structured crown springs back cleanly.
