The Beanie Guide
A beanie is knitted, not cut and sewn — which flips the entire production model. Gauge, yarn count and rib depth do the work that panels and buckram do on a cap. This is the short spec for cuffed, uncuffed, fisherman and pom variants that ship out of a mid-sized headwear line.

Anatomy
- Body — knitted tube closed at the crown with a hand-linked seam or gathered pull.
- Cuff — the folded-up hem; usually a 1×1 or 2×2 rib, 8–10cm before folding.
- Rib — the elastic band structure; 2×2 rib is the retail default for stretch retention.
- Care label — sewn into the inside cuff, not the crown.
- Woven label — folded on the front centre of the cuff; the industry-standard branding placement.
- Optional pom — separate ball, 8–12cm diameter, sewn to the crown point.

Yarn selection
- 100% acrylic — the volume default. Colourfast, machine-washable, low cost. Slightly less warm than wool.
- Wool / acrylic blends (30/70 or 50/50) — better hand-feel, warmer, still washable.
- Merino wool — premium; soft against skin, no scratch. Higher yarn cost and slower knit.
- Recycled polyester yarn — sustainability-story ranges; matches acrylic performance.
- Cotton — summer beanies only; poor stretch recovery in winter weight.
Gauge — what it changes
Gauge (GG) is the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine. Lower number = chunkier knit, higher number = finer knit.
- 7GG — chunky, cable-friendly, premium winter positioning.
- 9GG — the mid-weight retail standard for cuffed beanies.
- 12GG — fine knit, tighter surface, better embroidery legibility.
- 14GG — the fine-knit tech look; more expensive and slower.
Decoration
- Woven label on the cuff — the industry-standard placement. 5–6cm wide.
- Flat embroidery on the cuff — works on 9GG and finer; 7GG chunky knit distorts the design.
- Leather patch — sewn on the cuff face; premium DTC standard.
- Rubber / silicone patch — for waterproof or outdoor ranges.
- Avoid 3D-puff on knit — the yarn doesn't back the foam properly.
Common pitfalls
- Wrong gauge for the artwork — a small legible logo needs 12GG+, not chunky 7GG.
- Under-length cuff — folds too shallow to hold the label upright.
- Skipping the wash test — some dyed acrylics crock; test before bulk.
- Pom sewn with single thread — falls off after a week. Use bar-tack.
