600D vs 1680D Polyester
Every bag tech pack starts with a denier number. Get it wrong and you either ship a bag that abrades through in a year (denier too low) or you carry a brick that costs 30% more than it should (denier too high). Here's what denier actually means and how to match it to the bag category.
What denier means
Denier (D) is a linear mass density unit. A yarn is 1D if 9,000 metres of it weighs 1 gram. 600D yarn weighs 6 grams per 9,000 m; 1680D yarn weighs 16.8 grams. The yarn is thicker at higher denier, and a fabric woven from thicker yarns is heavier, stronger and more abrasion resistant.
Denier does not describe weave, coating or finish — only yarn thickness. A poorly-woven 1680D fabric can perform worse than a well-woven 600D. Always spec denier plus weave, coating and PU-backed weight per m².

Abrasion and tear performance
Denier is a proxy for durability but not a direct measurement. Two tests actually decide how long a bag will last:
- Martindale abrasion (ISO 12947) — 600D PU-backed typically survives 25,000–35,000 cycles; 1680D ballistic survives 80,000+ cycles before wear-through.
- Grab tear strength (ASTM D5034) — 600D at ~350 N; 1680D at ~800 N.
- Real-world translation — 600D lifestyle backpack lasts 2–4 years of daily use; 1680D duffel lasts 8+ years of gym/travel use.
Cost implications
Fabric cost scales with denier. A rough index at the same weave and coating:
- 600D PU-backed polyester — USD 1.30–1.60 per running metre (150 cm width).
- 900D PU-backed — USD 1.80–2.20 per metre.
- 1680D ballistic — USD 2.40–3.00 per metre.
- A 40 L duffel needs ~1.4 m of fabric; the difference from 600D to 1680D adds roughly USD 1.60–2.00 to FOB unit cost.
Common spec pitfalls
- 600D marketed as 900D — always ask for the mill's g/m² and weave count spec, not just the denier number.
- Coating omitted — an uncoated 1680D is not waterproof; PU or PVC coating must be spec'd separately.
- Mixing denier — face fabric 1680D but bottom panel 600D is a common cost-cutting move that fails at the bottom-panel abrasion point first.
